My Pink and White Quilt

Aunt Dorothy and Aunt Gladys were my baptismal sponsors.   They stood with my parents at the baptismal font when I was baptized in the Summer of 1953.   They promised to keep me in their prayers and guide my spiritual growth especially in the event that I should lose my parents.  At the time, it was customary for sponsors to remember the children on birthdays and holidays with little gifts.   This story is about Aunt Dorothy's gifts.

The gifts I remember from Aunt Dorothy were hand made.   I still have some of these special gifts.  I have two pajama bags, one is a floppy/furry puppy head and the other humpty dumpty.   I also have a wooden toy chest.  I'm not sure how old I was when I received the toy chest that was made by Uncle Harry but it was never used for toys.  It was my keepsake box and to this day holds special treasures, like my 4-H book, my glass tea set, a parasol lady pillow case, the cake knife from my wedding reception and my son's baby shoes.

On my confirmation day in 1967 Aunt Dorothy gave me a quilt top.   A simple pattern made with only two colors - pink and white.    I tucked it away in my keepsake chest with my other treasures for safe keeping.   Then, when I graduated from High School in 1971, Aunt Dorothy took the top and had the ladies at our church quilt it for me.

It was probably good that I didn't understand exactly how much work went into making this gift.   Because I didn't put it back in to my keepsake chest.  I used it.   I used it on my bed and I took it on picnics and when I wasn't feeling well I wrapped  it around me.  Today it's binding is a bit worn and I limit it's use to occasional cuddles and special people, like a soft pallet for my new grand-daughter.

Thanks Aunt Dorothy for your wonderful gifts, the best of which are your warm smile and wonderful example you have set for me since I was very small.
