This quilt is Charles Newkirk's baby quilt. It was most likely made
during the summer of 1919. The quilt has considerable wear and the
colors are faded. Peaking under exposed seams reveals some of the
original colors. The block centers and border fabric are tiny purple
squares printed on a white background. The half square triangle
fabrics that make up the ocean wave are various small dark and light prints
in burgundy or cranberry reds, cadet blue and whites, what appears to be
some black and white mourning prints and pale blue and light brown weaves.
The fabrics match the 1910-1935 section of Eileen Jahnke Trestain's book
Dating Fabrics a color guide 1800-1960. Better Homes and Gardens'
book Quilting - Pieces of the Past dates the ocean wave pattern
1890-1920.
This quilt measures are approximately 39"X56". The block
center squares are approximately 6" and the small triangle squares that make
the wave measure about 1.5". The outside border width is about 3".
There was probably more than one quilter but the majority of the quilting is
meticulous at about 12 stitches per inch.

The quilter is not documented. It was likely made by Carolena Winters
Newkirk or her mother, Mary Elizabeth Hoffman Winters. It would be
reasonable to think that Charles' sister, Agnes, may have helped make the
quilt. Agnes would have been 17 years old when Charles was born.
