This quilt measures approximately 82"X82". It includes nine 22" blocks
with triple sashing and 2" borders. The center block corners are
accented by red and yellow eight point stars. The triple sashing is
made up of three 2" strips, two yellow and one blue. Each block
includes a 10" blue center square, bordered by red, white and blue flying
geese strips and red, white and blue eight pointed star corners. The
stitching is very nice wreath, heart and star motifs; eight to ten stitches per
inch. The binding is machine sewed to the front, turned over the edge
and and blind stitched to the back.
The fabrics are faded; however, seam wear reveals colors closer to the
original. The blue is indigo blue with small white stars.
The
yellow is chrome yellow with small red and black print. The red is a solid
dark but muted red. All the fabrics could be dated as early as
1830-1860. However, since the family immigrated to the US in 1882, it
is likely the quilt was made between 1880 and 1910.
The quilter is not documented. The Flying Geese and Stars quilt is more worn than the Dove in the
Window quilt featured last month; however, it has similar qualities.
The piecing is not exact but the quilting is meticulous. It was likely
made by Carolena Winters Newkirk or her mother Mary Elizabeth Hoffman
Winters.
